Town in Cornwall, South West

What it's like to live in Redruth

What is it like to live in Redruth? It is a down-to-earth former mining town in west Cornwall, compact and granite-built, with a strong local identity and none of the holiday-resort polish of the coast. It suits people who want an ordinary, affordable Cornish town rather than a postcard one. Victoria Park and Kresen Kernow, the county's archive centre, are both close by.

"I'd move here" adds Redruth to the areas on your listing, so homes here are matched to you first.

Redruth is a town of about 15,626 people in west Cornwall, built on mining money and still wearing it in its granite terraces and steep streets. The TR15 postcode covers a compact centre where most of what you need sits within half a mile.

It is not a picture-postcard Cornish village, and that is part of the appeal. Redruth is a working town with a railway station, a secondary school, a community hospital a mile out and a high street that people actually use day to day. Rents in the wider Cornwall area are among the lower ones in the county's social housing stock.

This guide is for council and housing association tenants thinking about a mutual exchange here. It sticks to what is actually around: the schools, the parks, the buses and trains, the shops, and what kind of place this is to raise a family or start again. Where the figures cover the whole of Cornwall rather than the town, we say so.

Swapping to Redruth: key facts

Can I swap my council or housing association home to Redruth?

Yes, if you are already a council or housing association tenant. Mutual exchange means swapping homes with another social tenant, so it does not depend on the council waiting list: you need a tenant in or near Redruth who wants your area, and both landlords must agree. Landlords have 42 days to decide and can only refuse on set legal grounds. In 2024 to 2025, 128 council homes in Cornwall changed tenants by mutual exchange. On 1 October 2026, 2 homes were listed to swap within 15 miles on Mutual Home Exchange.

What is housing like in Redruth and who lives there?

Social renting is less common in Cornwall than nationally: 12.8% of homes across the council area are socially rented against 17.1% in England, split between 5.2% council and 7.6% housing association. Two thirds of homes are owned outright or on a mortgage and 19.7% are privately rented, which makes social tenancies here worth holding on to.

That is roughly 16.7 households waiting for every social home let in a year. Mutual exchange doesn't use the waiting list: if you already have a council or housing association home, swapping with another tenant can be a quicker way to move to Redruth.

A register counts households who have applied, so it isn't a simple queue: some are already social tenants hoping to transfer, and people can be on more than one council's list.

What is it like to live in Redruth?

Daily life is easy to organise because so much sits close together. A Premier and an Iceland are a couple of minutes from the centre, Tesco Superstore is half a mile out, and there are several pharmacies within a short walk. Redruth Library and the YMCA are both central.

The town has its rough edges and quiet patches, and some streets are steep going if you are pushing a buggy or carrying shopping. But there is a real community feel, with community centres at Redruth Community Centre and the Highway Community Hub, and people who have been here generations.

What are the schools and family life like in Redruth?

Families are well served for choice within a short walk. Pennoweth Primary and Nursery is about two tenths of a mile away, with Trewirgie Junior and Trewirgie Infants' and Nursery close behind, plus Treleigh Community Primary just under a mile out. Curnow School, a special school, is also nearby.

Redruth School is the secondary, around six tenths of a mile from the centre, so most children can get there without a long journey. It also has a learning resource centre.

For time outdoors, East End Park and Victoria Park are both within a quarter of a mile, with Plain-An-Gwarry Park, Trefusis Park and the Trefusis Community Orchard a little further. Camborne Redruth Community Hospital and its diagnostic centre are about a mile away, which matters when you have children. Across Cornwall as a whole, 16.3% of residents are under 16, slightly below the England figure, so this is not an especially young county.

How do you get around Redruth?

Redruth station sits right in the middle of town, around a tenth of a mile from the centre. That is a genuine advantage in Cornwall, where plenty of towns have no railway at all. It puts Truro, Camborne, St Austell and Plymouth within reach without a car.

Bus stops cluster around the railway station, so train and bus connect in the same spot, with more stops near the Ambulance Station half a mile out. If you do not drive, Redruth is one of the more manageable Cornish towns to live in.

For drivers, Camborne Retail Park is about two and a half miles away and the rest of the county opens up quickly. On foot, the centre is walkable and most schools, parks and shops here are under a mile from each other, though the hills are real and worth a thought if anyone in the household has mobility problems.

What is there to do in Redruth?

The Regal is the heart of it: a cinema, theatre, bar and restaurant a couple of minutes from the centre, with C Fylm screenings also running locally. For a town this size, having a proper independent venue on the doorstep is not something to take for granted.

Kresen Kernow, Cornwall's archive centre, is under half a mile away and worth a look even if family history is not your thing. The library is closer still.

For exercise there is Redruth Yoga in the centre, St Pirans boxing club and West Coast Academy nearby, and Buzz Fitness Cornwall and Duchy Crossfit a mile or two out. Pubs are plentiful and central, including the Red Lion, the Oxford Inn, Charlie's Bar and Cooper's Wine Bar. Nightlife is modest and mostly pub-based, with the Robartes Arms a couple of miles away. If you want more, Truro is a short train ride.

What is work and the local economy like in Redruth?

Across the Cornwall council area, 53.3% of adults are in work, below the England figure of 57.4%, and 25.3% of residents are 65 or over against 18.4% nationally. That tells you something real about the local economy: an older population and plenty of part-time and seasonal work.

The better news is that unemployment is lower than the national picture, at 2.6% against 3.5% in England, and unemployment-related benefit claims stood at 3% of working-age people in August 2026 compared with 4% across England.

Locally, health services around Camborne Redruth Community Hospital, schools, shops and the retail park at Camborne are visible employers. The railway station widens your options a lot: Truro is the county's main employment centre and is reachable by train. If your work is seasonal or hours vary, be realistic about winter income before you commit to a move.

How safe is Redruth?

Like every town centre, Redruth has police incidents logged each month. In August 2026 there were 136 within about a mile of the centre, made up of:

  • Anti-social behaviour reports10
  • Vehicle crime3
  • Bicycle theft1
  • Shoplifting2
  • Other theft9
  • Theft from the person1

Source: data.police.uk street-level crime. Counts cover a fixed one-mile radius around the centre, so busy high streets and stations always record far more than the residential streets around them, and most incidents are minor. Compare like with like: a similar-sized town centre, not a village.

Is Redruth a good place for council and housing association tenants?

Right now: 2 homes to swap within 15 miles of Redruth.

If Redruth appeals, the practical step is to list your own home on Mutual Home Exchange and set Redruth as a desired area. It is free, and your advert is what other tenants search against. Without it, nobody can find you.

Moving through a mutual exchange is often the realistic route in Cornwall. In 2024-25 the council let 1,422 social homes and 128 council homes moved by mutual exchange, while 23,731 households sat on the housing register. A register is not a simple queue, so an exchange gives you something you can act on yourself.

Write your advert honestly: bedrooms, heating, garden, parking, floor level, landlord and rent. Say what is good about where you are now, because somebody else is looking for exactly that. Then be patient and reply to messages quickly. When a match comes up, visit Redruth at different times of day and walk the hills before you decide. Both landlords still have to approve any swap.
