What it's like to live in Truro

There is a good cluster of primary schools close in. Bosvigo School and Truro School are both around 0.4 miles, with Archbishop Benson C of E Primary School and St Marys C of E School at 0.5 miles and Tregolls Academy at 0.7 miles. For many households that means a walk to the gates rather than a drive.

For secondary age, Richard Lander School is 2.3 miles out and Pencalenick School is 1.9 miles. Both are a bus or car trip rather than a stroll, so check catchments and places before you swap.

Parks are close and varied. Victoria Gardens, Hendra Park and Rosedale Park are all under half a mile, and Daubuz Moors at 0.5 miles gives you somewhere greener and wilder for a longer walk.

In the wider Cornwall area, 16.3% of people are under 16, a little below the England figure of 18.6%.

Truro is an easy place to be on foot. The bus station is a couple of minutes from the middle of town, with several stands plus stops at Lemon Quay and Haven House, so services across Cornwall start and end right by the shops rather than on the edge of town.

Truro railway station is about half a mile from the centre, which matters if you travel further afield or have family elsewhere in the country. Being able to reach a mainline station without needing a car is a genuine advantage in Cornwall, where many places have neither.

If you drive, you get the same convenience with the usual city-centre trade-offs: parking is a consideration and the streets are narrow in places. Check what parking comes with any property you are offered before you commit.

For a small city, Truro packs a lot in. The Plaza cinema is in the centre, the Pannier Market is a short walk, and there is a wide spread of pubs and bars including the Market Inn, Truro Lounge, Mannings and the Playhouse Bar. Vanilla covers late nights if that is your thing.

Libraries are unusually well represented. Truro Community Library and the Courtney Library and Cornish History Research Centre are both a few minutes away, with Cornwall Council Libraries and Archives 0.8 miles out and the Cornwall Family History Society in the centre.

For exercise, Anytime Fitness and KO Fitness are within half a mile, and the edge of Cornwall National Landscape is a five-minute walk for free outdoor space.

Community life runs through places like Truro City Community Hub, the Moresk Centre, the Cathedral Chapter House and Malpas Road Community Centre.

Truro is Cornwall's administrative and retail centre, so the city centre itself is a significant source of jobs in shops, hospitality and services. A number of health and clinic services also operate in and around the centre.

Across the wider Cornwall area, 53.3% of adults are in work, below the England figure of 57.4%, while unemployment sits at 2.6% against 3.5% for England. In August 2026, 3% of 16 to 64 year olds were claiming unemployment-related benefits, compared with 4% nationally.

That mix reflects an older population: 25.3% of Cornwall residents are 65 or over, well above the England figure of 18.4%. Seasonal and part-time work is a feature of the county, so think about how your hours and income would travel with you.

Social housing is scarcer in Cornwall than in England as a whole. Just 12.8% of homes in the council area are socially rented, split between 5.2% council and 7.6% housing association, against 17.1% nationally. Two thirds of homes are owned outright or with a mortgage and 19.7% are privately rented.

That tightness is exactly why mutual exchange matters here. Waiting lists are long and turnover is low, so a swap is often the most realistic way of moving into or within the city.

Cornwall's population is 570,305 and skews older than England, with 27.9% aged 45 to 64. Truro city centre, being compact and well connected, tends to draw a broader mix, including younger households who want to be near work and the shops.
