What it's like to live in London

Family life is possible here, but it takes planning. Soho Parish Primary School is about 0.4 miles away, with St Clement Danes Church of England Primary at 0.6 miles and St Joseph's and St Matthew's CE both around 0.7 miles. Westminster High School is roughly half a mile off and Westminster City School about 0.8 miles.

For days out and after-school time, Victoria Embankment Gardens and the Whitehall Gardens section are the closest proper green spaces, both about 0.2 miles away. Charing Cross Library is the same short walk.

Be realistic about space. Under-16s make up just 13.3% of the borough's population, so there are fewer children around than in most places, and flats here are typically small.

You can walk to a huge amount from WC2N, which is the real prize. Charing Cross station is about 0.1 miles away for mainline trains and the Underground, with Waterloo and Waterloo East under a mile on foot across the river, and Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Circus within a mile.

Buses are everywhere. Trafalgar Square stops sit a minute or two from home, and Westminster Station and Pier is around half a mile away if you fancy the river.

Driving is the weak point. Central London means congestion charging, very limited and expensive parking, and slow traffic at most hours. Plenty of households here manage without a car and rely on trains, buses and their own two feet instead.

Few places in Britain give you this much within a ten-minute walk. Leicester Square's cinemas, ODEON Luxe West End and Haymarket, and the Institute of Contemporary Arts are all roughly 0.2 miles away, and the West End's theatres and bars sit immediately north.

Nightlife is on your doorstep whether you want it or not, with small bars and clubs scattered around Charing Cross. The Gym Group at Charing Cross and several independent studios are within a couple of hundred metres.

For quieter time, Victoria Embankment Gardens and the riverside walk are the local standbys, and there are several libraries nearby including Charing Cross Library and the West End Arts Library.

Across Westminster, 57.3% of adults are in work, almost exactly the England figure of 57.4%. Unemployment sits a little higher at 4.8% against 3.5% nationally, and 4% of working-age residents claimed unemployment-related benefits in August 2026, the same as England.

The local economy around WC2N is hospitality, retail, theatre, tourism and offices, with government and professional work close by in Whitehall and the wider West End. Many jobs are shift-based and evening-heavy, which suits some households and not others.

Commuting out is straightforward from Charing Cross and Waterloo, so work across London and into the South East is realistic without a car.

Westminster has around 204,236 residents. Social renting accounts for 28.3% of homes, split between council at 13.1% and housing associations at 15.2%, which is well above the England average of 17.1%. Private renting dominates at 43.3%, with 27.4% owned outright or on a mortgage.

In practice that means social tenants here are neighbours to a very transient private-rented population. Turnover is high and the mix of people is broad.

Expect flats rather than houses, and expect them to be compact. Crime is worth weighing up too: 4,728 offences were recorded within about a mile in July 2026, mostly other theft, theft from the person and violence, which reflects the huge daytime and night-time crowds rather than quiet residential streets.
